Network security outfit SonicWall has strengthened its e-mail security credentials with the acquisition of privately held e-mail security and compliance solution vendor MailFrontier for US$31m cash.

MaiFrontier’s product portfolio offers protection against inbound and outbound e-mail threats such as spam, viruses and phishing alongside policy enforcement and control functionality to simplify regulatory compliance and corporate governance. MailFrontier has a customer base of more than 1,700 companies using its appliance and software-based e-mail security offering worldwide.

“MailFrontier’s solutions, providing power without complexity, are a natural fit with our offerings,” said Matthew Medeiros, president and CEO at SonicWall. “Secure content management is a high growth segment offering excellent potential for SonicWall and our partners worldwide. MailFrontier’s IP portfolio provides a significant opportunity for future expansion of our capabilities in this area.

“Our channel partners and their customers are adamant that they need a powerful, simple solution that can be integrated into their broader secure network,” added Medeiros.

Anne Bonaparte, president and CEO of MailFrontier, said: “Given the continued complexity and hybrid nature of threats attacking corporate networks, security is of critical importance. End users are increasingly concerned about protection of content on outbound email paths for regulatory compliance and corporate governance requirements. Our combined technology strengths and distribution breadth will enhance the comprehensive security solutions we are able to offer our customers.”

SonicWall claims that the acquisition of MailFrontier underlines its commitment to creating profitable opportunities for channel partners by offering them an integrated set of products and subscription services that provide simple alternatives to complex technology.

SonicWall now has a global network of more than 10,000 solution providers taking its product portfolio to market. The acquisition of MailFrontier also gives SonicWall’s managed services partners the opportunity to deliver a hosted e-mail security platform to end-users.
