Dredging contractor, Van Oord, is working flat out to take sand from the path of a new fibre-optic cable that is being laid through UAE territorial waters.
The contractor has just weeks left until the new cable is put in place — after that time it will be unable to come within 100 m of it.
Van Oord aims to make the most of its small window of opportunity before the cable is laid, by removing as much sand as possible from its path over the next week.
The contractor is removing between 800 000 m3 and 1.5 million m3 of sand every week from the seabed of the coastal waters of Dubai, to be used to form Nakheel’s Palm Deira island project.
