Abu Dhabi Customs beefs up security with screening systems

Border patrol will now be able to inspect undercarriages of vehicles

Abu Dhabi Customs have beefed up security measures with the deployment of new vehicle screening solutions from US-based Perceptics.

The company’s Under Vehicle Inspection System (UVIS) and License Plate Reader (LPR) imaging system will now be integrated into the city’s existing border security systems.

Once installed, the UVIS views a vehicle undercarriage to compare high-resolution digital camera images with either its previously taken image or that of a similar vehicle, while the LPR imaging system features an Arabic optical character recognition engine that recognises all types of license plates.

The images produced by LPR and UVIS will then be used by another Perceptics system - Vehicle Inspection Software (VIS) - which maintains a hit list of suspect vehicles. E-mail alarm notifications can also be sent to off-site officials to fuel action.

SIMTIX, Perceptics’ exclusive master distributor for the MENA region, have been assigned to oversee integration of the systems.

“This project is an excellent opportunity for us to help raise security standards, particularly in border patrolling, throughout Abu Dhabi, the Emirates and the entire Gulf region,” said Wafic Faraj, CEO, SIMTIX.
