Abu Dhabi Duty Free set a new sales record in 2015, reaching AED1.5 billion ($408.3 million) across its retail, food and beverage and services sectors, according to latest figures.
Sales were up 10.3 percent on 2014's figures despite increasing economic volatility worldwide, the airport retailer said in a statement.
The retail category continued its upward growth trend, rising by 7 percent to AED1.079 billion while F&B sales recorded a 25.7 percent increase to account for the majority of growth across Abu Dhabi Airports' businesses last year.
The services sector posted a 15.2 percent rise, of which 26.8 percent was fuelled by airport advertising, the statement said.
"The continued success of Abu Dhabi Airports is driven by the growth of the national airline, Etihad Airways and the attractiveness of Abu Dhabi as a destination for global events, culture, heritage, and superb world class infrastructure and facilities", said Ali Majed Al Mansoori, chairman of Abu Dhabi Airports.
"Abu Dhabi International Airport continues to offer a wide range of commercial offers that reflect and meet our consumer demographics. These are linked to a diverse promotional and marketing calendar with activations that have included prizes such as supercars, gold and instant Duty Free cash vouchers," he added.
Perfumes and cosmetics, food and confectionery, luxury watches, electronics and gold generated the largest growth rates within Abu Dhabi Duty Free last year.
The sale of luxury watches rocketed 185.1 percent, while sales of sunglasses rose by 13 percent, books and magazines by 9.6 percent, food and confectionery by 7.3 percent, and pharmacy goods by 5.5 percent. For all the latest retail news from the UAE and Gulf countries, follow us on Twitter and Linkedin, like us on Facebook and subscribe to our YouTube page, which is updated daily.
