Abu Dhabi police issue 705,000 traffic fines so far this year

Traffic fines almost triple in first half of year compared to same period in 2008 - paper.

More than 705,000 traffic fines were dished out by Abu Dhabi police in the first half of this year – more than 60 percent for speeding, it has been reported.

According to a report in the National this was almost three times the number of traffic fines for the same period the previous year.

A total of 705,377 traffic fines were issued by police, the paper said, adding that the figure was equal to one for every second person in the emirate.

The rise in the number of fines was due to the police’s clampdown on dangerous driving, Col Hamad Adil Al Shamsi, the head of the traffic and patrols directorate of Abu Dhabi Police, told the paper.

The fines included 39,215 for illegal parking; 29,841 for blocking traffic; 3,742 for driving through red lights; 1,876 for illegally overly tinted windows; 8,036 for parking in disabled spaces or in front of fire gates; 6,253 for boxing in other vehicles by parking; and 30,685 for failing to wear seat belts.

Arabian Business: why we're going behind a paywall

I just wanted to say, I'm originally from London. The only time i've been angry and driven agressively has been in the UAE. Last week I checked online and saw that I had been fined 3 times at 400Dhs each for exceeding the speed limit. That really gave me a shock to the system. Since that time I can honestly say I've been driving to the speed limit, exceeding it by no more than 5 to 10 KM. I leave a little early now so that I'm not in a rush. People cut me off, horn, flash, almost run their cars into me, but that's normal I suppose. But for some strange reason, I've not been reacting to it, I'm completely calm and I suppose this is the effect that the police will want to happen to all dangerous drivers.

i am in the same position and really struggling to remain calm when folk flash their lights for me to move (out of the slow lane!) in the knowledge that police are now fining drivers who do not move for flashing headlights (800dhs instant fine). also some of the cameras are set to EXACTLY the indicated speed limit - I have seen many flashes at what looks like just over indicated so best to sit around 50km/hr in 60k zone.
