Abu Dhabi-owned Manchester City pay the highest salaries in world sport with average weekly wages topping $150,000, according to a new survey.

The Sportingintelligence’s Global Sports Salaries Survey for 2013, compiled in association with ESPN, showed the average first-team pay at Man City was £5.2m per year ($8.05m), or £100,764 ($154,990) per week in the period under review.

The survey used average first-team pay to produce as close as comparison as possible between 278 teams in 14 leagues in seven sports across 10 countries.

Man City climbed from last year’s third place to take the top spot - ahead of US baseball giants, the Los Angeles Dodgers (£93,380 a week).

The English Premier League club, transformed as a footballing force under the ownership of Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Mansour, has been forced to increase wages in its bid to attract the best football players from all over the world.

Man City won the Premier League in the 2011/12 season before finishing second to local rivals United this year.

Man City’s continued ascent up the list and the Dodgers’ rise means last year’s top two clubs, the Spanish giants of Barcelona and Real Madrid, have both fallen slightly.

Barcelona dropped three places to fourth, while Real Madrid dropped one place to third.

Another baseball team, the New York Yankees, climbed to fifth, with AC Milan, the LA Lakers, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan making up the top 10.

"The presence of both Manchester City and the Yankees inside this year’s GSSS top five underlines the combined financial muscle of that pair, who recently announced the joint acquisition of New York City Football Club (NYCFC) – a new franchise that will be MLS’s '20th expansion club'", a statement said.

The NBA remains the best-paid league overall per man, with average annual salaries of £2.72m a year, or £52,274 per player per week on average.
