Accor launches Sofitel in Muscat

Accor Hospitality Middle East has announced the signing of a new hotel in Oman, after signing a deal with owners Al Mashriq Hotels and Tourism.

Accor Hospitality Middle East has announced the signing of a new hotel in Oman, after signing a deal with owners Al Mashriq Hotels and Tourism.

The Sofitel Muscat and Spa, scheduled to open in January 2011, will comprise over 230 rooms and a spa as well as a grand ballroom, a board room and five meeting rooms catering for Muscat's expanding business clientele.

Accor Hospitality Middle East managing director Christophe Landais said: "Following the re-launch of Sofitel last month, we plan to reposition the brand in the luxury market and become the premier European luxury hotel operator in the world".

"Oman is undeniably the region's emerging leisure capital; I believe our hotel will meet the growth in demand for the deluxe five-star sector in the Sultanate," he added.

Landais said he expected about 70% of the hotel's business would be corporate, explaining: "It will respond to the growing corporate market, which is booming thanks to efforts to promote the area".

Al Mashriq Hotels and Tourism managing director Sami Ahmed Macki added: "The primary idea [regarding location] was to be by the beach and the airport, but it is also near The Wave development, so guests will have access to a golf course and marina."

Macki said he saw a "fruitful" future for the property.

"The tourism industry in the Sultanate is being promoted fiercely," he explained.

"We're trying to keep everything in line to develop the [tourism] industry."
