Acer has landed a blow in the Saudi PC battle by signing a distribution agreement with Metra Computer - also a distributor for close rival Dell. The vendor hopes the tactic of working with one of its competitor's chief allies, which was forecasted by Channel Middle East back in August, will help it capture a greater share of the keenly-fought Saudi computer market.
Under the terms of the agreement, Metra will distribute and provide technical support for Acer's commercial product line-up including notebooks, desktop PCs, servers, projectors and selected monitor models.
"Acer appointment of Metra is based on their professionalism and track record of delivering results in the regional SMB and enterprise market," explained Karim Hammad, commercial sales manager at Acer KSA. "We have high standards and expectations for building a successful business in the commercial space, and with Metra, Acer has further strengthened its commercial distribution network for its resellers."
The addition of Metra doubles the size of Acer's commercial distribution channel in Saudi Arabia, which until now had been served by Al Jammaz. Both the vendor and its new partner admit that one of their main priorities will be to target SMB companies in the Kingdom and exploit the growing demand for computer hardware.
"Acer's success as a brand is a direct reflection of its winning channel partner programme," said Tamer Elshourbagy, general manager at Metra Computer. "We are proud to be associated with a world leader in IT Products. Metra intends to further increase Acer's market share and work with Acer to address needs of the reseller community," he added.
IDC data for the second quarter of this year shows that Dell controls 24% of the total Saudi PC market, while Acer sits third with 16% market share. However, both lag behind market leader HP, which garnered 28% of the market in Q2.
