Notebook and PC vendor Acer has said that it expects to see continued growth in the EMEA region despite the global economic crisis. The vendor also fuelled rumours that it would be stepping into the mobile internet devices (MID) domain — brought about by its acquisition of PDA and pocket PC maker Eten for $291 million earlier this year — by highlighting the potential of the category.

Emanuele Accolla, VP Acer EMEA and managing director at Acer META, feels that thanks to Acer’s multi-brand strategy, a result of a series of recent high-profile acquisitions, the firm would not only be able to continue to exhibit growth but also to maintain it’s footing as one of the biggest notebook and PC vendors on the market.

“The third quarter of this year was still a good quarter and we expect the fourth quarter to slow but there is nothing wrong with this market,” asserted Accolla. He went on to say that the mini-notebook segment has shown great promise for Acer and is likely to continue to do so.

“We do not have any fear that the global financial crisis is going to have an effect on this market in the near future,” said Accolla.

However, although Accolla may not have detailed any casualties to the financial crisis for Acer he did suggest that growth in the firm’s mobility products may have come at the expense of its desktop business, describing some “cannibalisation” of the desktop market.

Acer was clear to highlight what it describes as mobile internet devices as a direction the market is likely to go in the future and one that it seems set to follow. “We are going to separate the category of the market in three ways,” he said describing how the multi-brand strategy, which includes Packard Bell and e-Machines, would be applied in this region.

The three divisions the firm highlighted are notebooks, mini-notebooks or netbooks and MIDs. Acer now has a huge spectrum of computing products but has yet to enter the MID arena but it is clear that this is something it will look to in the near future to back up its confident outlook of the region’s market. “By next year the amount of mobile devices will exceed desktops,” predicted Accolla.
