Acer recalls battery packs

Taiwanese PC maker Acer is recalling 27,000 notebook battery packs because of problems with overheating.

Taiwanese PC maker Acer is recalling 27,000 notebook battery packs because of problems with overheating.

The lithium-ion batteries are made by Sony and are the same ones that were recalled in their millions last year by many leading vendors, including Dell and Apple, after a number of high profile incidents of notebooks bursting into flames.

Acer said the recall affects certain models of its TravelMate and Aspire notebook lines sold between May 2004 and November 2006.

Separately, Apple last week issued a fix for performance problems with batteries in its MacBook and MacBook Pro notebook lines.

The vendor was keen to stress the problems are only performance related and the batteries do not pose a safety risk. Apple recalled 1.8 million battery packs last year as part of the Sony recall.

The performance problems include the battery not being recognised and not charging up when plugged into AC power.
