African telco moves tech support team to Dubai

MTN Group, Africa's largest mobile operator, relocates technical services dep't.

MTN Group, the largest mobile phone operator in Africa, is planning to move its technical services support department to Dubai, the company confirmed on Tuesday.

“The planned relocation of the technical services support team to Dubai is part of the Group’s ongoing response to the challenges of the changing global telecommunications industry. It is also intended to address the logistical challenge of supporting the Group’s networks in the Middle East in particular, and certain parts of Africa,” a spokesperson from MTN Group’s corporate affairs told Arabian Business in a statement.

Launched in 1994, the MTN Group has operations in more than 24 countries, including those in which it has mobile licenses.

Its operations in the Middle East and North Africa include MTN Irancell, MTN Syria, MTN Sudan, MTN Yemen, MTN Afghanistan, MTN Cyprus and MTN International Carrier Services.

According to the company, the MENA region is its fastest growing region, with Iran seeing the biggest growth.

According to MTN’s 2009 annual results, the telecom operator has more than 90.7m subscribers worldwide, with 29 percent of those located in the MENA region.

The group’s MENA revenue in 2008 was R17.2bn ($2.2bn), which represented 17 percent of the group’s total revenue. It currently has a market cap of $26.32bn. Its latest annual results will be announced

The support team will consist of less than 30 members of staff; however the company did not give a time frame for the planned move.
