Construction firm seals deal to build on-shore port facilities for Abu Dhabi Ports Company.
Construction company Leighton Holdings Ltd has won a contract worth $381 million at the Khalifa Port and Industrial Zone in Abu Dhabi, it was announced on Wednesday.
Leighton subsidiary Al Habtoor Leighton Group will carry out the work for the Abu Dhabi Ports Company which includes the construction of the on-shore port facilities which involves the construction of 47 buildings and associated infrastructure works.
Leighton said in a statement that work had already started and the project was due for completion by September 2011.
David Savage, managing director of the Al Habtoor Leighton Group, said Abu Dhabi continued to offer strong new work prospects, particularly in large-scale infrastructure, and it was likely to be the group’s most important market for the foreseeable future.
It is also the largest contract this year for Al Habtoor Leighton, which was part of a consortium that pulled out of a major deal to build a third concourse at Dubai International Airport in April.
The group also stopped work in December on a contract to build the Trump International Hotel and Tower, in partnership with Murray and Roberts of South Africa, after the developer Nakheel decided to suspend the project.
