Money Station opens, based on petrol station concept
Al Hilal Bank has launched its Money Station branch in Dubai, introducing the Middle East’s first-ever drive-thru teller system that allows customers to carry out their transactions within the comfort of their own cars.
“Our focus has been from day one on innovation in our products and services,” said Mohamed J. Berro, group chief executive officer of the Islamic bank. “This is a full comprehensive banking solution through drive-thru.”
Similar to the concept of a gas station, the money station allows its customers to attain their needed services without having to step foot out of their comfort zones.
“There are tellers outside that serve these customers that come through the money station,” he said. “They do their complete banking transactions while in the car. There is an actual customer service that finalizes their requirements.”
Customers park beside one of three paralleled money stations, all of which are designed to give the familiar feel of filling up petrol. Once parked, a teller appears on a small screen, ready to attend to the required service. All documents that need to be handed to the teller are placed in a tube, and then sent up a slot through the click of a button. The documents are sent back to the customer through the same slot.
Berro added: “Dubai is a city that has always been at the forefront of innovation, and I think this is another addition that fits very well within the DNA of Dubai.”
Although tube-banking has been used in the United States, this is the first time it has been implemented in this region, with the company pointing to increased competition within the banking sector as one of the key reasons for the launch.
“Competition has been very healthy within the UAE. Competition drives … better service, drives better products, better prices from the consumer or to the banking population,” he said. “This is why the banking sector in the UAE is recognized as a very advanced banking sector globally.”
“This [technology] is the first in the Middle East and we are proud for that,” he said. “This is yet another innovative action that the bank has done to continue to position [itself] as a modern, innovative, Islamic Bank.”
Last year, Al Hilal rolled out the UAE’s first thumb verification system for banking transactions and the Middle East’s first-ever ‘Gold to Go’ bank-installed gold dispensing machine.
In November last year, the bank also announced a $500m sukuk, which is expected to be closed this quarter.
Great article. thanks for the insite. I'll be using this soon!
Drive-thru teller systems and stations have been operational in Dubai since the late 1980s, and are all over the country, including the Northern Emirates. In fact, one of the first ever was and still exists in the Jumeirah center on Jumeirah beach road.
Interesting reporting Arabian Business!
Perhaps nice to mention the location of this Money Station: Al Wasl Road coming from Safa Park towards Spinneys. Take the first service road after the Lebanse Bakery.
Ziad, the article refers to drive through tellers and not drive-through ATM's. I believe this is the first of its kind in Dubai ... You can check them out on jumeirah road. This is a fully operational teller system where ou deal with customer support
Ziad Plz dont mix the normal ATM located on UAE roads with this new type of branches .. this is a fully operated branch where you can access all the services without leaving your car. Plz read the article not the header only
Great article! Very informative
Myself having been part of the digital banking solutions industry since its first conception two decades ago, quite frankly don't find this as 'innovative' as they claim. atm machines and stations can attend to a lot of your banking requirements. The long-term feasibility of having a person sit in one station attending to cars is simply a risky business for the bank, especially amid the ensuing harsh times facing banks.
Also, since you gentlemen have just differentiated between tellers and atm stations, perhaps this should've been clarified further by Hilal in their press announcement.
Overall, good attempt at launching a new service..
guys i would like to add that this is not only teller services, you can do all the services of the bank (account opening, finances,, ect)
i know drive through services avialable since long but this is all the services all together
also they are open 8 am to 8 pm and they will open drive though coffe shop as well.
its worth visiting
good reviving of this banking idea from old times, i think NBD long before operated one branch here like similar to this but it didnot succeed so they shut it down after one year i think. 1989 or 1990
