Alcatel is to supply an IP telecoms solution for the new third terminal at Dubai International Airport.
Under the terms of the agreement, Alcatel, which is now known as Alcatel-Lucent following its recent merger with Lucent Technologies, will provide a voice over IP (VoIP) solution for 16,000 users for the terminal.
The deal was signed before the merger was completed last month.
The implementation of the system is expected to start within the coming months and be completed in time for the opening of the terminal, which is scheduled for late 2007.
“The solution will change the way the people interact with different airport systems. Through telephone sets, they will be able to access many systems that are running already in the airport that were not accessible before,” said Hesham El Nahhas, regional director of enterprise sales for Alcatel-Lucent Middle East.
The other systems at the airport include flight information, management information, baggage handling, building management, computer networks and tetra radio network.
The deal with the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) is a significant one for Alcatel-Lucent, El Nahhas said, as it is the first fully IP-based communication system it has provided to an airport, and it is also the largest airport customer win Alcatel-Lucent has secured in the region. The vendor also has deployments at airports in Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Egypt and Syria.
El Nahhas said it won the contract after a rigorous application process. “We were able to show our strength in the integration field besides the openness of the system and that was one of the key criteria for the selection,” he said.
“The rapidity with which passenger throughput at Dubai International Airport has grown over recent years, and continues to grow still, calls for a constant review of our services and facilities both in terms of capacity and technologically,” said Khalifa Al Zaffin, director of engineering and projects directorate at DCA.For all the latest tech news from the UAE and Gulf countries, follow us on Twitter and Linkedin, like us on Facebook and subscribe to our YouTube page, which is updated daily.
