Emad Burnat didn’t exactly have an easy trip to the Oscars this year.
On arrival at Los Angeles airport, the Palestinian documentary filmmaker was detained by immigration officials, who refused to believe his reason for entry.
“Although this was an unpleasant experience, this is a daily occurrence for Palestinians, every single day, throughout the West Bank,” the director said at the time.
Burnat is believed to be the first Palestinian filmmaker to be nominated for the Best Documentary Feature at the Academy Awards. Although his film, Five Broken Cameras - a first-hand account of life in Bil’in - didn’t win in Los Angeles, Burnat did pick up the Directing Award at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.
