Hanan Bahamdan

Industry: Arts & Entertainment

Designation: Artist

Country: Saudi Arabia

Hanan Bahamdan became something of a household name when in 2007 her painting, Mannci or ‘The Forgotten’, sold for three times its top estimate for £36,500 in a Sotheby’s auction.

Bahamdan, who has a degree in business from Riyadh’s King Saud University, has been painting for more than twenty years and has held exhibitions in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Her first exhibition was held in her Riyadh home before she joined a studio in Egypt with Mohamed Sabry, one of the leaders of pastel painting in the country. She has also lived in Beirut and London. Bahamdan has been quoted as saying that her paintings focus on what many people typically pass and do not stop to look at. Shatha Al Tasan, the head of the Hiwar Gallery, has acclaimed Bahamdan as the first female Saudi artist to win international recognition. Bahamdan is the daughter of Abdullah Bahamdan, the chairman of National Commercial Bank.
