Company: Mohammed A Sharbatly Co. Ltd.
Country: Saudi Arabia
Wealth: 4.1 Billion
Mohammed Sharbatly’s firm is probably one of the biggest fresh
food concerns in the world. The company began in the early 20th century with Sayed
Abbas Sharbatly’s involvement in Jeddah’s food trade. During the Second World War,
the sector went through a small boom, and this continued to build until the oil
booms of the 1970s. At that time, Sayed Abbas' son began importing bananas from
and into the 1980s, when it was handling nearly half of all fruit imported into
the kingdom by sea.
Today, under the leadership of Mohammed, the company has more
than ten branches across Saudi, with branches in Bahrain
and Dubai. It has
expanded its product scope to include all manner of imported fresh and frozen foods.
