Fans storm gates after being locked out of The Weeknd concert

Organisers Flash Entertainment have defended their decision to close the gates prior to a concert by The Weeknd in Dubai on Friday, citing safety concerns.

Angry fans stormed through the closed gates of Du Arena, pushing through security personnel, in what Flash called "inappropriate fan behaviour".

Scenes of chaos unfolded as the concert began with hundreds of fans still cordoned off outside the gates, prompting Flash to issue a statement.

It said: "The health and safety of our fans, staff and artists is always our number one priority.

"The du Arena can easily accommodate 35,000 concert-goers. However, due to a large number of fans arriving simultaneously to The Weeknd concert, the gates were closed as a safety measure."

Flash added: "We are aware that this caused upset and disappointment and understand this can lead to frustration. We are disappointed to hear there were instances of inappropriate fan behavior and are working with necessary teams to ensure a smooth and safe entry ahead of the following concerts.

"We would like to remind everyone that gates to du Arena open at 6pm daily and encourage concert-goers to arrive early."
