Dubai Opera will host Handel's Messiah in concert in a pre-Christmas show that will bring 200 musicians and voices together.
Handel’s best loved oratorio will be performed in its entirety for one performance only on December 8 by St. Petersburg Tchaikovsky Theatre of Ballet Orchestra and Dubai Opera Festival Chorus.
The Dubai Opera Festival Chorus comprises some 150 voices - all based in the UAE - that was specially-created earlier this year for the BBC Proms Dubai for a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth.
The UAE-based ensemble will come together with the St. Petersburg Tchaikovsky Theater of Ballet Orchestra, conducted by Andrei Danilo, immediately after their run of festive Nutcracker performances.
Since its triumphant premiere in Dublin in 1742, Messiah has remained Handel’s most frequently performed work and is a favourite with audiences around the world.
Composition of the complete 260-page oratorio, began on August 22, 1741, and was composed in just 24 days, when Handel finished the final orchestration on September 14, 1741.
Jasper Hope, Dubai Opera chief executive, commented: “A beloved festive tradition, Handel’s celebrated oratorio - with its spectacular “Hallelujah!” chorus - provides a moment during the busy season to experience reflection, renewal and joy and I am delighted we are able to present this wonderful piece of music with a combined force of 200 local and international voices and musicians during the UAE’s Year of Tolerance.”
Tickets are on sale from April 21 and are available at www.dubaiopera.com starting from AED175, with an early bird discount of 20% available on VIP and Platinum until May 5.For all the latest art news from the UAE and Gulf countries, follow us on Twitter and Linkedin, like us on Facebook and subscribe to our YouTube page, which is updated daily.
