Tech Data Middle East has confirmed that the boss of its enterprise-focused Azlan operation, Sanjiv Mehrotra, is leaving the company.
Mehrotra only took up the reins in August 2006 after joining from the enterprise solutions group of Ingram Micro India.
At the time of his arrival, Mehrotra identified his key objectives as "sustaining the growth momentum" and developing the value that Azlan delivers to its vendor partners.
However, Hanspeter Eiselt, managing director at Tech Data Middle East, admits the move had not bought the results both parties hoped for, citing a clash in corporate cultures for Mehrotra's exit. "Unfortunately it didn't work out between us," commented Eiselt. "Obviously the Indian sub-continent has a different management approach than what you find in an EMEA-driven organisation," he added.
Mehrotra's role will now be filled on a permanent basis by Christian Weinelt, who recently joined Tech Data Middle East to run its HP business unit.
In contrast to Mehrotra, Weinelt has a 14-year background with Tech Data Europe and possesses extensive experience of serving the value added reseller channel.
News of the move coincided with the recent visit of two senior Tech Data EMEA executives to the region. Andy Gass, managing director UK, Ireland and Middle East, and supply chain boss Steve Russell, both made a 48-hour stop at the company's Dubai office.
Their arrival sparked further speculation in the channel that Tech Data is taking a close look at its future in the Middle East.
"I can definitely assure you that is not the case," said Eiselt. "Andy is new in the business from our side and this is the first available time he has had to come out and meet us. He has been helping us to close some deals and finalise our financial planning for next year," he explained. For all the latest tech news from the UAE and Gulf countries, follow us on Twitter and Linkedin, like us on Facebook and subscribe to our YouTube page, which is updated daily.
