A baby boy was born on a Qatar Airways flight from Miami to Doha, forcing the plane to divert to Canada, it has been reported.

An unnamed woman was on board the QR778 flight on Sunday, which was diverted to Newfoundland when the crew learned she was in labour.

Passengers reported that as the plane neared Greenland, there was an announcement that it was being diverted to Gander International Airport in eastern Canada due to a medical emergency.

The baby was born around 30 minutes before the Boeing 777 flight landed in a snowstorm, according to Doha News.

The local Gander Beacon newspaper also reported that two doctors were on the flight and were able to offer assistance to the woman.

It quoted Brian Hicks, manager of safety and airside operations with the airport authority, as saying that upon arrival of the aircraft they activated emergency response services.

Paramedics from James Paton Memorial Regional Health Centre met the aircraft, and the mother and baby were transported to the hospital.
