An 18-month-old baby girl has reportedly died on board a Gulf Air flight bound for Bahrain.

Hrishipriya, daughter of Bahrain residents Binoy Mundakkal and Ashwini Binoy, fell ill while travelling from Cochin with her mother, according to the Gulf Daily News.

The newspaper quotes a Gulf Air spokeswoman as saying: “The incident happened onboard flight GF271, which was flying from Cochin to Bahrain.

“The flight was diverted to Abu Dhabi International Airport due to the medical condition of one of the passengers, an infant, who later passed away.”

Gulf Daily News also cites sources who reportedly said the flight left Cochin at 4.20am local time and landed in Bahrain at 10.10am, almost four hours later than its scheduled arrival time of 6.20am.

On realising her baby had died, the child’s mother collapsed in grief on the plane and was taken to hospital in Abu Dhabi. “She was treated and later recovered enough to be taken back to the airport,” the source reportedly said.

One source said the child had symptoms of fever and started vomiting before she died. Another told the Gulf Daily News that she had a heart condition at birth and had recently undergone surgery in Kerala.
