Born in Kenya, athlete Yousof Saad Kamel now represents Bahrain and specialises in the 800m event. And the son of two-time 800m World Champion Billy Konchellah made headlines in his adopted country last month when he won the gold in the 1,500m and bronze in 800m at the 2009 World Athletics Championships held in Berlin.
Earlier this year, he stopped competing for Bahrain in an argument over unpaid salary and bonuses, and declared himself willing to compete for Kenya. However, Bahraini officials held his passport and so he found himself unable to compete in any competition. He returned to the track in July, still representing Bahrain, and Athletics Kenya has subsequently stopped processing his attempt to compete for the African nation. Kamel has since insisted that he has put the dispute behind him and is happy to run under the Bahrain flag.
