Gulf states listed among 25 friendliest countries; Canada took top spot in global survey
The UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia have been named among the world’s 25 friendliest nations, according to a poll by UK-based lender HSBC.
Bahrain topped the rankings with the No.13 spot, followed by the UAE which ranked 23rd.Saudi Arabia and Qatar took the 24 and 25 spots in the global list.
The results show a vote of confidence for Bahrain, which imposed martial law last month following weeks of anti-government protests.
Canada was named the world’s most accommodating nation, followed by Bermuda, South Africa and the United States. France, which this month enforced a public ban on Muslim full-face veils, came in at No.7, just beating the UK.
To rank countries, HSBC surveyed 4,127 expatriates in more than 100 countries between April and June 2010. Countries needed to have at least 30 respondents to be included in the rankings, so only 25 countries are ranked.
People rated their host countries on everything from economics to raising children and overall experience.
Then, to determine which places were the friendliest, Forbes looked at the results in four categories: ability to befriend locals, success in learning the local language, capacity for integrating into the community, and ease of fitting into the new culture.

So out of 25 countries in the poll of best place for an expat livestyle, the UAE came 23rd for the overall experience.
Look forward to the UAE breaking the top 20 next year.
Impossible! This study must be a farce!
Out of 25 countries, coming in the last quartile is it an achievement?
Surprised not to see Oman! Oman has always been the friendlist nation in the GCC by far! I reckon there are some shortcomings to this research/survey.
Bahrain even in the top 25?? Ahead of Oman? Interesting results, but a review is definitely required! :)
Tis is hilarious. These are not the 25 friendliest con tries but the 25 with enough expats. And dubais is number 23, only 2 places are more unfriendly an Dubai.
Dear AB if you need tomspin news do it better please. Either that or you think most of your refers will not pass the headlines.
@tarique, if Oman is not on the list it simply means not enough respondents.
This is surely a joke.
I agree that it is a farce. Try to get a visa to get into Saudi Arabia. My new born grandson will be a teenager by the time it is issued.
Who would go to Bahrain now? I really enjoyed going there but I cannot tell what it going on there.
Saudi should have been higher! The people here are very friendly...I love living here!!!!
The spin on this headline is incredible.
The report states "Countries needed to have at least 30 respondents to be included in the rankings, so only 25 countries are ranked." Therefore UAE (23), Saudi Arabia (24) and Qatar (25) are clearly the lowest ranked countries in this list.
The headline implies that these countries have ranked highly.
A more relevant headline would be "Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia named as world's most unfriendly countries".
Is very safe in Bahrain now. Just stop watching CNN
