Blaze engulfs Sharjah factories

Workers seriously injured after gas explosion causes huge fire at Sharjah industrial estate.

Three factories were on Tuesday destroyed by flames as a fire broke out at the Sharjah industrial estate.

Up to 12 workers were injured in the blaze, ten with severe burns, which started around 4.30pm.

According to police, the fire began with the explosion of an oil tank in the Al Sharq lubricant company in Industrial Area 13, and spread to nearby paper and glass factories. The Criminal Investigation Department is investigating further.

Director general of Sharjah police, Colonel Saleh Ali Al Mutawa, said there was no ventilation in the factory or warehouses and that no alarm system was in place. Workers had been cooking on site, according to witnesses.

UAE armed forces were deployed to help tackle the blaze which continued late last night. Injured workers were taken to Al Qassimi and Al Kuwaiti hospitals in Sharjah and the Iranian Hospital in Dubai.
