A leisure boat driver has been killed after his vessel collided with a breakwater at Al Raha Beach in Abu Dhabi, police confirmed on Wednesday.

The Abu Dhabi Police air ambulance airlifted three men to hospital on Tuesday after the incident but the driver of the boat later died, a police statement cited by news agency WAM said.

Air operations responded to the incident on Tuesday morning involving a total of nine people, joining on-site emergency teams including ambulance and police, the statement said.

Three people with injuries classified as moderate were taken to hospital, while medical care was provided for the others at the site of the accident. No further details were given.

Ali Mohammed Mazrui, director, Air Wing, Abu Dhabi Police, urged sea goers to check the weather, inform the concerned authorities both before departure and after return, carry safety and security items, particularly life jackets, a GPS device, and a communication device, and to report any emergency, if necessary, to search and rescue operations.
