Construction workers rioted on the Burj Dubai Old Town site this week, when the buses that were due to take them back to their camps, were delayed.
Angry workers broke into offices, attacked security workers and caused an estimated US $1 million (AED3.6 million) in damage.
The row on the Burj site sparked a copycat protest on Al Naboodah Laing O’Rourke’s airport project.
Thousands of workers were involved in both protests — the biggest to have hit the UAE construction industry this year.
Al Naboodah Laing O’Rourke, the contractor on the Old Town project, was not available for comment on the incident.
Strikes and protests have become increasingly common in the local construction industry over the last year, as workers have demanded improved pay and living conditions.
