Carrefour comes out cheapest

A Retail News Middle East price survey found that Carrefour was the cheapest retailer on a basket of 21 identical items.

Carrefour has come out on top in a Retail News Middle East price survey of four UAE supermarkets. Carrefour was cheaper than Union Co-Op, Geant and Spinneys on a basket of 21 identical items.

The headline figures tell only half the story, however. What came to light was huge disparity in the price of seafood between different operators. Whereas Carrefour was charging just AED18.90 for a kilo of fresh hammour on the day the survey was carried out, Geant was charging a much higher AED59.90.

When fresh hammour was removed from the basket, Geant was a couple of dirhams cheaper than Carrefour and Union Co-Op fell slightly behind the big two French operators.
