CAT operator takes on an international challenge

Regional operator Ghulam Fareed of Marwan General Contracting is heading off to Malaga, Spain, to compete in the tenth Caterpillar Operator Challenge this month.

Regional operator Ghulam Fareed of Marwan General Contracting is heading off to Malaga, Spain, to compete in the tenth Caterpillar Operator Challenge this month.

The Caterpillar Operator Challenge is the only international competition that brings together operators of heavy machinery from across the world and tests their skills.

Fareed secured his place in the finals when he won the Caterpillar Operator Challenge at the Mohamed Abdulrahman Al-Bahar yard in Sharjah in April.

The competition put more than 60 operators from across Dubai and the Northern Emirates through their paces. Operators had to use three machines - a 424 D backhoe loader, a 318 C excavator, and a 226 B skid steer loader - in a number of skill-based events, mirroring common applications of the equipment.

"The competitor skills will be tested and scored in different machines, ranging from large to mini-sized class equipment," said Malcom High, the event coordinator at Caterpillar's Demonstration and Learning Centre in Malaga.

"I'm sure we will see an exciting competition."
