Shoppers have been injured but police have yet to confirm number of casualties
The ceiling of a busy supermarket in Doha partially collapsed on Saturday, injured shoppers inside, it has emerged.
Qatar’s Ministry of Information confirmed the news in a tweet at 1pm on Saturday, saying: “A partial collapse in the roof of a supermarket on Salwa Road, and civil defense actions initiated. The store was evacuated without serious injury or death.”
Several shoppers were injured when the upper floor of the two-storey building gave way and at least six ambulances were seen arriving at the site, Doha News reported.
Police have yet to confirm the number of casualties and there are not thought to have been any deaths.
A store employee told Doha News that seven people, including two children, were injured, and that the store was busy with shoppers when the incident took place.
Another witness said the affected area was the back half of the shop, where the clothing, perfume and electronics departments are located.
Police have blocked off the service road in front of the shopping strip while investigations are ongoing.
