Cement producers struggle to keep up with boom

Local cement companies are struggling to keep up with the surging demand brought about by the booming construction industry and government’s US $46 billion (ZAR372 billion) spend on infrastructure.

Companies such as Holcim South Africa and the country’s largest cement producer, PPC, are being forced to import cement to alleviate the gap in supply.

The construction industry has seen yearly cement demand increase by nearly 50% since 1992, and this is expected to continue to grow until well after 2010.
