Man identified as Sulaiman Yamadayev fought for Chechnya in 1994-96 Russian war.
The Chechen man who was reportedly assassinated in Dubai over the weekend has been identified as Sulaiman Yamadayev, a former member of a Russian defence ministry unit, it was revealed on Monday.
Yamadayev had been “under close observation” since he had entered the UAE four months ago, according to Lt Gen Dahi Khalfan Tamim, the chief of Dubai Police, in comments he made after the shooting on Saturday in Dubai Marina.
The identity of 35 year old was confirmed by the Azerbaijan-based news agency APA, who said Yamadayev was a former commander in the Vostok battalion, from 2003 until May last year, according to UAE daily The National.
Yamadayev had fought on the rebel side in the first Russo-Chechen war in 1994-96, taking charge of Gudermes, Chechnya’s second-largest city, according to an AFP report published last year.
It is believed that his assailant was waiting for him at Jumeriah Beach Residence (JBR) when he arrived home on Saturday - the shooting had all the hallmarks of an assassination, the police, who are investigating the killing, said at the time.
Officials at the Russian Embassy in Abu Dhabi declined to comment on the matter other than to say they had not been approached by Dubai Police, the newspaper added.
