A Chinese firm spent an estimated $80m on a 10-day junket for nearly 15,000 staff members in the UAE last month, Dubai’s tourism authority has confirmed.

Last month, Nu Skin China, a subsidiary of US firm Nu Skin Enterprises, flew around 14,500 staff to the UAE for the 10-day motivational gathering and Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) said the trip “generated an economic impact estimated at $80m for the emirate,” 7DAYS newspaper reported.

“Our successful hosting of the 14,500-delegate incentive group from China has shown the world what we in the emirate have long known,” Steen Jakobsen, director of the Dubai Convention and Events Bureau (DCEB), a division of DTCM, was quoted as saying.

“That Dubai has the expertise, infrastructure, dynamic leisure attractions and key partnerships to host events and groups of any size and scale, from anywhere in the world.”

Reports claimed the company needed 77 flights and 39 hotels in Dubai and Abu Dhabi to accommodate staff, with the company also said to have hired two Emirates charter flights.

During the trip, the group visited the Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, Al Bastakiya, Dubai Creek and the Palm Jumeirah along with other locations in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.

DCEB won the bid for Dubai to host the Nu Skin incentive mega-group in January 2013, having competed against Macau, Seoul in South Korea and Singapore.
