Cisco makes move for chipmaker

Cisco is acquiring privately held chipmaker SpansLogic to improve network traffic efficiency, it said last week.

Cisco is acquiring privately held chipmaker SpansLogic to improve network traffic efficiency, it said last week.

The networking giant said embedding SpansLogic's technology, which makes processors that improve packet processing speeds across networks, would lead to increased feature efficiency in Cisco's switch platforms.

"With SpansLogic, Cisco will be able to improve overall traffic efficiency and throughput across the network," said Tom Edsall, senior vice president of Cisco's Datacenter Business Unit (DCBU).

The terms of the deal were not disclosed. The acquisition is subject conditions and is expected to close in the third quarter of Cisco's fiscal year 2007, ending April 28.

Upon close of the transaction, the SpansLogic team and products will be integrated into DCBU.

The deal follows last month's acquisitions of storage management vendor NeoPath Networks and web conferencing solutions provider WebEx.
