Cisco urges oil sector to go IP

Companies in the oil and gas industry should look at moving to internet protocol (IP) networks, one of Cisco's senior executives in the region said last week.

Companies in the oil and gas industry should look at moving to internet protocol (IP) networks, one of Cisco's senior executives in the region said last week.

Tarek Ghoul, newly appointed manager for the networking giant's North Gulf region stressed the importance of moving to IP networks for companies in this sector.

"Technology is an enabler and can provide fundamental improvements for organisations operating in the oil and gas sector by delivering an experience that has a direct impact on enhancing operational efficiency, optimising cost structures and boosting overall business agility," Ghoul commented.

Business continuity and reliable availability of information and applications are better ensured through the use of a converged network, according to Cisco.

The speed and continuity of service with an IP network, which carries voice, video and data on the same network, means problems such as disruption are minimised, something particularly important for companies where change is a constant.

"A host of factors create this inherent volatility, keeping the [oil and gas] industry on its toes," commented Ghoul. Companies are put under further pressure by the rising demand for oil, he added.

"At the same time as having to cope with an environment in which little can be taken for granted, worldwide demand for oil is increasing, and in some countries, the annual increase in demand is reflected in double-digit growth," Ghoul said.
