Cisco wins multimillion-dollar contract from QP

Cisco Systems has won a multimillion-dollar project with Qatar Petroleum, Oil&Gas Middle East can reveal.

Cisco Systems has won a multimillion-dollar project with Qatar Petroleum, Oil&Gas Middle East can reveal. A senior official from Cisco confirmed the win and said the project would involve the provision of switching, routing, security, wireless, Storage Area Network (SAN), and network management services for the national oil company.

According to the regional business development manager Eyad AlQadi, “Communication is an acute problem in the oil and gas industries because the value of their products can fluctuate widely in the space of a few days or even hours. An inability to respond rapidly to changing market conditions means companies in the sector risk missing out on opportunities.”

He says companies in the Middle East have realised the importance of realtime networking and are integrating advancements in IT into their day-to-day processes. Cisco has also bagged major contracts from Kuwait National Petroleum Company and Petroleum Development Oman in recent times.

AlQadi says that between 15 and 17% of Cisco’s clients in the Middle East region are oil & gas clients and that the market is expected to grow rapidly this year. The Cisco manager does not think this sudden interest in spending money on IT is because of the high oil prices, but attributes it to a ‘heightened awareness of IT issues’ in the region.
