ComGuard lays down the law

With the region's users seemingly oblivious to the need for IT security, ComGuard has released a set of guidelines to help local users avoid being infected by viruses or internet worms.

With IDC suggesting some 90% of companies have experienced a virus problem over the last year, many companies are obviously underestimating the importance of regularly updating their system’s protection. To combat this state of affairs, ComGuard has released a set of guidelines to help users avoid being infected by viruses or internet worms.“Companies need to think of installing security patches as an essential ongoing business process,” says Daniel Nufer, managing director of ComGuard. “The slammer virus [for example] created widespread disruption around the world, but could have been contained with a patch that had been made available back in July 2002,” he adds. The security company’s guidelines revolve around taking a holistic view of system integrity and looking at patterns of network traffic, equipment performance and overall operating system effectiveness. “The lesson companies need to draw from the increasing prevalence of viruses is the importance of maintaining and regularly updating your protection,” comments Nufer.“In many cases, the protection is available, but businesses are not applying it in a consistent, effective way. It’s important that systems managers and employees are kept up-to-date with the latest developments around viruses and malicious codes, and that people are warned against letting their guard down,” he adds.
