Company believes we can build for 20% less

Twenty percent could be shaved off construction costs with green building products set to be introduced to the UAE by a Sharjah-based building materials company.

Twenty percent could be shaved off construction costs with green building products set to be introduced to the UAE by a Sharjah-based building materials company.

According to Khalifa Al Midfa, chairman, Gulf International Trading Group, the company has come up with a formula that will revolutionise the way in which buildings in the region are constructed.

"This will be achieved through the use of new construction techniques, less dependency on human labour and the use of less materials like cement and steel," he said.

Gulf International Trading Group was established in September 2007 in line with the new UAE sustainability laws.

The focus of the group is the international trade and importation of unique construction products from around the world.

"Our buildings will also bring down the overall costs due to the sustainability of the products that will go into constructing them. We are focusing on three main aspects: thermal efficiency, energy efficiency and cost effectiveness.

One of the current issues in the construction industry is that the use of environmentally-friendly materials will raise the overall cost of projects by around 10%, when compared to the cost of using regular materials.

According to Midfa, the cost of constructing low-rise buildings with green products could drop by 20%, but the initial investment for the construction of skyscrapers will go up by 10%.

He also said that the maximum time for building a low-rise prefabricated building would be a little over a month.
