Construction work has started on new residential apartments at Masdar City in Abu Dhabi with developer Reportage Real Estate marking the official ground-breaking of its 170-unit Leonardo Residences project.

The one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments will go up within the existing footprint of Masdar City, and nearly all (93 percent) of them have already been reserved.

"The official start of construction of Leonardo Residences is another milestone in the realisation of the world's most sustainable urban development, and further evidence of the construction progress happening all around the city," said Mohamed Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar.

Abu Dhabi-based Reportage Real Estate said in a statement that Leonardo Residences is its first project, to be followed by other developments in Al Raha Beach and other parts of Abu Dhabi.

More than a third of Masdar City's planned built-up area will be completed within the next five years, and third-party developers are playing an important role.

These will also include a six-floor office block and upscale private apartments and townhouses, to be completed by the end of next year by Tristar Real Estate, a new campus of Emirates College of Technology, and a new GEMS Education school.
