Candian firm OpenAire awarded the contact to build the roof, which will measure approximately 77 metres by 418 metres
The world’s largest motorised retractable roof will be built at Deira Mall in Dubai, it was announced on Monday.
Candian firm OpenAire said it has been appointed to design and install the retractable skylight at the mall, which will be home to over 1,000 shops, cafes, restaurants and entertainment outlets.
“Dubai is known for being on the cutting edge of innovation, fashion, technology and shopping,” said OpenAire President and CEO Mark Albertine.
“It is therefore fitting that the new Deira Mall has been fitted with the largest motorized and fully automated retractable roof in the world, that will bring the outdoors into the mall providing guests with a unique new world class shopping experience,” he added.
According to OpenAire, the retractable roof at Deira Mall will be approximately 77 metres by 418 metres, with a fixed glass half dome at each end project about 47 m from each end of the skylight, resulting in an overall length of about 512 m.
“The OpenAire team had to develop a design that reflects the client’s vision of having a fully open sky view, which meant moving the massive skylight steel structure hundreds of metres along both sides of the skylight,” Albertine explained.
Following a detailed analysis, OpenAire achieved a design that reduces the overall weight of the skylight structure and minimises the impact of the skylight loads on the base building structural systems.
“We also developed a proprietary sealing system to ensure a fully sealed and whether tight, thermally broken skylight when the retractable roof is closed,” Albertine added.
When opened, the mall will be home to the largest volume of leasable space in the UAE, with retail space of over 1.6 million sq metres.
OpenAir has worked on a number of projects around the world, including the installation of retractable roofs on Royal Caribbean ships and the new Sharjah Shopping Mall in the UAE.
