The contractor working on the La Solarium project at Dubai Silicon Oasis has denied that the fatal car park roof collapse there earlier this month was related to the use of sub-standard building materials.

Independent investigations into why the roof of the underground car park collapsed are still being carried out by the developer of Dubai Silicon Oasis, as well as La Solarium's project manager, Hamilton, and the main contractor, Sun Engineering & Contracting.

The accident killed one labourer and injured three.

"We have ideas as to how the accident might have happened - it could be anything, such as the design for example, but until we see the technical reports we will not know," said Mr Hafez, CEO, Sun Engineering & Contracting.

"But it was not due to the materials because we have the test results and everything was fine based on the documentation," he added.

Yousef Madi, vice president-technical, Credo Investments, told
Construction Week

that the accident happened when a concrete slab collapsed during the casting process.

"I expect our technical investigations to be finished this week and we have also appointed Bureau Veritas to audit and review the remaining structure," said Madi.

The man who died was sleeping under the roof when the accident happened just after midday on 16 January.

Madi added that one injured labourer is now out of critical condition.
