Authorities in the US have launched a murder investigation following the death of a Saudi student in Miami.

Yasser Abualfaraj, 23, was discovered dead in his Florida apartment on Sunday by his roommate, who was visiting the deceased’s home located opposite the University of Miami, where he was studying, local media reported.

The late student, who had been studying architecture in the US since 2015, was found with multiple signs of trauma, according to the Miami-Dade Police Department. However, the cause of death and possible motive remain unclear.

Police said a medical examiner would soon carry out an autopsy, though he did not specify a date.

Classes at the University of Miami were cancelled and a vigil was held by students and staff to mourn Abualfaraj.

The Saudi Embassy in Washington said it is following up with the investigation and providing the victim’s family with necessary support.
