Tributes have been paid to the young Irish school teacher who was one 17 people who died in the Dubai bus crash.

Fiona Geraghty (27), from Dublin, died in hospital in Dubai owing to injuries sustained in the accident. Her boyfriend, also from Ireland, suffered internal bleeding and head injuries and is due to be released from hospital today.

A family friend told Irish media that the couple had recently decided to extend their stay in Dubai. Both were teachers at the School of Research Science in Al Warqa, Dubai.

“Fiona’s parents were in Lanzarote celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary when they got the call yesterday that their pride and joy was gone,” the family friend told the Irish Independent.

“She was a lovely, bright, young, intelligent girl, who loved life. Fiona was just out in Dubai for a year with her boyfriend trying to save. I’m just devastated. I feel for her family - I’m numb.”

Dubai Police said the accident happened when a bus, with 31 passengers on board, crashed into a sign post along Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road near the Rashidiya exit to the metro station.

Mwasalat, the Omani government-owned transport company, has suspended all trips between Dubai and Muscat until further notice.
