The leader of an international criminal gang involved in murder, drug trafficking and money laundering, has been arrested in Dubai.

Danish national Amir Faten Mekky, who is wanted by Interpol and had eluded security forces in Europe, was arrested on Wednesday, June 3 when Dubai State Security forces raided his place of residence and took him into custody. He is currently being investigated and will be handed over to the relevant authorities.

Mekky had entered the UAE on November 14, 2018 using alternative travel documents, data from Dubai State Security revealed. He is associated with Radwan Al-Taghi, the head of the ‘Angels of Death’ gang, and who was arrested in Dubai in December last year and handed over to Holland.

The arrest was made by a joint task force including the Dubai Public Prosecution and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

Mekky is currently being investigated and preparations are underway to hand him over to the relevant authorities.

"The high-profile arrest sends a clear message that Dubai will not tolerate international criminal activities even if the crimes have not been committed in the UAE. It also emphasised the UAE’s commitment to fulfill its responsibilities towards combating transnational crime,” a statement from Dubai State Security said.
