Hundreds of people have been killed after a major 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck central Turkey and northwest Syria on Monday.

Buildings collapsed, with rescue efforts ongoing for survivors trapped in the rubble.

The earthquake hit at 4:17 AM local time, and was felt as far away as Lebanon, Greece, and Israel.

In Syria, at least 245 people have been killed across Aleppo, Hama, and Lattakia, and more than another 500 injured. Meanwhile, a source told AFP that at least eight people had died “in the regions of Azaz and al-Bab,” before adding that the number was likely to continue rising.

Across the border in Turkey, officials have said that at least 76 are dead, with the search for survivors continuing through Monday morning.

The country’s interior minister Süleyman Soylu said 10 cities had been effected by the earthquake, adding that Gaziantep, Kahramanmaraş, Hatay, Osmaniye, Adiyaman, Malatya, Sanliurfa, Adana, Diyarbakir and Kilis had all suffered damage.
