UAE offers AED50K to ‘biggest weight loser’

Over AED50,000 is up for grabs for anyone who loses the most weight in eight weeks, a new challenge has been announced by RAK Hospital and the Ministry of Health and Prevention called the ‘biggest weight loser challenge’.

The challenge is set to begin on Friday, January 20 until March 22, 2023.

The winner of the challenge is eligible to win AED300 for every KG lost, AED200 for every KG lost for second place, and AED100 per KG for third place.

The objectives of the biggest weight loser challenge as listed by the official website are:

  • To improve the quality of life of an individual/community/society by promoting the national agenda of quality health and quality healthcare.
  • Joining hands with health authorities (MOH-Preventive Medicine) in implementing comprehensive lifestyle medicine and chronic disease management programs.
  • For RAK Hospital to provide a comprehensive one-stop health solution, from Illness to Wellness.
  • To support the community with necessary information and education for the better management of weight and better health.

Interested participants have to register through the online RAK Hospital registration link, registration begun on January 12 and will close on January 22.

Walk-in registrations can also be done at RAK Hospital from January 20-22. Registration is free for both online and walk-ins.

Criteria for winner selection

  • Maximum Weight (Kgs) Lost
  • In the case of a tie, Percentage Weight Loss will be the deciding factor.
  • Separate prizes will also be awarded to the participants with the best percentage of weight lost.

Top 10 participants other than the first, second and third place will also win vouchers, top 100 participants will receive certificates.

Eligibility

  • All adult UAE residents, 18 years and above can participate.
  • Both male and female participants are eligible for the challenge.
  • Any medical or surgical weight loss is not allowed in this contest and will result in disqualification.
  • Participants who have been recently hospitalised, in the last 3 months and who are currently on medication are advised to consult their physicians prior to participation.
  • Medical clearance/medical consent to be provided by participant.
  • For the Corporate Team Challenge, employees must produce their ID cards when required.

Last year, A Sharjah resident won AED18,000 in the RAK Biggest Weight Loser Challenge, this was calculated based on AED500 for per kilogram lost.

On Tuesday, Arabian Business reported in the UAE, 61 percent of the population who have attempted to lose weight over the past year, have failed to reach their goals “or did so only short term,” a new study by Allurion revealed.
