Legendary British singer David Bowie has died after losing an 18 month battle with cancer, his spokesperson confirmed on social media.

Bowie marked his 69th birthday on Friday, January 8 with the release of a new album, "Blackstar", which was lauded by critics as the latest work in a long and innovative career.

In the last few years, the chart-topping singer has kept a low profile after undergoing emergency heart surgery in 2004. His last live performance was at a New York charity concert in 2006.

Born David Jones, Bowie rose to fame with 1969's "Space Oddity" and later through his jumpsuit-wearing alter ego Ziggy Stardust.

While best remembered for his music, the Londoner is also credited with inventing the first ever "Bowie Bond" in 1997. The radical concept was copied around the world and some analysts claim it was the catalyst for the onset of the global financial crisis in 2008.
