Following a decision made by the Association of European Airlines (AEA) in May, express cargo carriers DHL and TNT have both joined the organisation, as its 34th and 35th members, respectively.

The move is set to add a further dimension to the AEA, as both DHL and TNT integrate different modes of transport into one system.

"We are delighted to join the AEA, which has an excellent track record of representing the interests of airlines towards the European institutions," said Geoff Kehr, senior vice president of DHL's Aviation Europe division.

"We are looking forward to a fruitful cooperation and plan to bring to AEA - together with our colleagues from TNT - our expertise from the express cargo operator perspective."

"TNT's membership of AEA will bring mutual benefits to AEA and TNT," added Niky Terzakis, managing director of TNT Airways.

"We are confident that this move will strengthen the cargo voice of the association towards European Union decision makers, as well as allowing us to tap into AEA's formidable network in Brussels."

DHL operates regular direct daily services to destinations in Europe, Africa and the Middle East from its air hub in Leipzig. Based in Liege, TNT flies to more than 70 European airports.

"Like all our members, TNT and DHL are very anxious to tap into the cost savings and efficiency enhancements that the Single European Sky is set to bring, and they share our extreme concern over the way proposals for aviation Emissions Trading have departed from reality, and transformed a tool into a weapon that is clearly threatening the entire aviation industry," announced AEA chairman Peter Hartman.
