The Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF), which is scheduled to run from 10-17 December 2006, will give away prize money worth a total of US $325,000 as part of the ‘Muhr Awards for Excellence in Arab Cinema’.
The Muhr awards will honor Arab filmmakers in the feature, documentary and short film categories.
The competition aims to recognise Arab and UAE filmmakers as part of the festival’s overall strategy to develop and support the Arab film industry.
The best feature at the competition will win US $50,000.
There will also be awards for the best script in the shorts category, and the ‘most promising filmmaker’ for 2006.
“DIFF aims to share the creative excellence of Arab filmmakers with its audiences from around the world,” says Abdulhamid Juma, deputy director general, TECOM.
“The Muhr Awards will mark a new milestone in Arab cinema, and pave the way for a new generation of filmmaking talent in the UAE.”
Submissions for scriptwriting are open until November 15, 2006.
Details of the Muhr Awards are on www.dubaifilmfest.com, the official web site of the Dubai International Film Festival.
