A motorist has been jailed for two months after he ran over and killed a British expat in Dubai, it was reported on Tuesday.

Dubai Traffic Court sentenced the 31-year-old Brazilian defendant, who was on a visit visa, Dubai daily 7Days reported.

It reported that the man was arrested three hours after the incident as he tried to leave the country via Dubai airport in November.

The 29-year-old British victim died at the scene in Al Sufouh Road about 2am, the court was told.

Tests showed that the driver had consumed alcohol. Dubai Traffic Prosecution charged him with wrongfully causing death to a pedestrian, driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and fleeing the scene of an accident, the paper said.

The victim was crossing the road at an undesignated spot when he was hit by the car.

Dubai Traffic Court also suspended the Brazilian’s driving licence for six months and ordered him to pay AED150,000 blood money to the victim’s family.

Prosecution has appealed against the sentence, 7Days said.

I hope his sentence is significantly increased at appeal. 2 months for killing someone whilst driving under the influence of alcohol, realizing your guilt & trying to flee the country? Disgraceful.

Disgrace you get 12 months for bouncing a cheque !!

Money has always been the number one priority.

How much would he have paid had it been a local that was run over? I think we need a schedule of fines WRT running over pedestrians, per gender, religion and nationality, as a reference brochure for visitors to Dubai.

Justice in this part of the world in strange. Kissing a 4 years girl in public (her uncle) put the man 8 years in prison. But killing a person 2 months jail.

grow up Red Snappa. Blood money is for victim's family. If the deceased victim was crossing from designated place, the story would have been different.

And three months in jail today for a Filipino who celebrated Christmas with red wine at home because a Syrian neighbour had some noise complaints and immediately called the police instead of talking to them.

So he gets punished more severely for celebrating his traditions at home than the other guy for killing someone and running away from the scene.

Justice rules.
